「『算盤』英文怎麼說？」那，就是...
★ abacus /'æbәkәs/
這個字常常搭配 “on” 或 “using.”
→ We played a game in class, and calculated the score on an abacus. It was fun!
(我們在學校玩遊戲，然後用算盤來算分數，好玩啊！)
→ I remember that forty years ago they figured out my account balance at the bank using an abacus!
(我還記得40年前的銀行會用算盤來算出我戶頭的餘額！)

「老師，那『心算』怎麼說？」
其實，有兩個說法。如果你是說「心算課」的那種心算，就是很系統化地學習算術，就是：
★ mental arithmetic /ˈmɛntəl əˈrɪθməˌtɪk/
Mental （形容詞）是「心理的」、「腦力的」、「精神的」之意。
Arithmetic （名詞）是「算術」的意思，有時會簡單的指加減乘除。
→ I learned mental arithmetic when I was in junior high school. It’s actually pretty useful!
(我念國中時學會了心算，其實很有用啊。)
→ My parents sent me to a mental arithmetic class. It’s not as boring as I thought it was going to be.
(我父母叫我去上心算課，其實沒想像中那麼無聊。)

不過，如果我們不要說這個算術系統，只是要說我們「在心裡」算出了別人可能會寫下的一個計算，會說：
★ in my/your/his/her head
就是「在頭裡」的意思！
→ Wow, did you just figure out the bill in your head? Impressive!
(哇，你心算了帳單哦，好厲害誒！)
→ My classmate is pretty good at math. I always have to write things down, but he just does the problems in his head.
(我同學的數學很好，我通常都要寫出來，但他都是用心算的。)
